Two fin whales, wowed whale watchers aboard Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari on December 1st. Fin whales are the 2nd largest whale species with lengths that can rival a small blue whale and are seen in the waters off Southern California throughout the year.
The two whales were seen lunge feeding on surface krill (a small shrimp-like crustacean) off Dana Point, in front of the The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. Our whale watching passengers and crew were especially thrilled when the two whales, while our boat was in neutral and stationary, decided to swim directly in front of our bow giving us a rare up-close and unforgettable look at one of the biggest animals in the world.
