Alien or fish? This alien-looking creature is actually an Ocean Sunfish (or Mola Mola). Mola mola’s are the largest bony fish in the world and can weigh up to 5,000 lbs. Dana Point whale watching passengers had an amazing encounter with a large sunfish estimated to be about 5 feet. Mola mola can be shy though the larger ones are usually less skiddish. This sunfish was intrigued by our boat and camera! It swam up and down the length of the boat. The mola even stopped and turned to look directly at us in the Underwater Pod.
