What could have been a cold, wet, Dolphin & Whale Safari was made an unforgettable trip by a pair of gray whales on their southbound journey to the lagoons of Baja.

Sunday, December 16th, was our second day of seeing gray whales out of Dana Point. Wouldn’t it be nice if we saw 3 whales on the third day?

We encountered the whales off Laguna Beach, not too far from land. They are often spotted within just a mile or so of the shoreline, where some believe they use Dana Point’s headlands as a landmark on their migration. Gray whales typically dive for 4 or 5 minutes before surfacing to breathe. However this rebellious pair chose to break the “rules” and didn’t always adhere to the usual breathing patterns which made it more difficult to track and photograph them.

Gray whales are seen December through May off of Dana Point, California. Visit www.dolphinsafari.com to see gray whales during their annual migration.
